Analytics

To see which pages get read and how people find this site, I use Umami, an open-source analytics tool that I host myself. When you visit a page, it records:

  • the page address;
  • the site that linked you here;
  • your browser, operating system, device type and screen size;
  • your language;
  • your approximate location (country, region and city).

It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. Your IP address is used briefly to work out your approximate location and to group the pages you view into one visit, but it is never stored. Visits are grouped using a code that changes every month, so I can’t link your visits from one month to the next, or identify you from them.

I do this on the basis of my legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used. The data is held on my own server in London (Oracle Cloud, UK South). It isn’t shared with anyone, and it isn’t used for advertising.

Encrypted backups are kept with Dropbox in the United States. That transfer is covered by the UK–US Data Bridge, under which Dropbox, Inc. is certified. The statistics are kept indefinitely, because they can’t be traced back to any individual.

You can stop this tracking by blocking the script pythia.limeblast.co.uk/omen.js with your browser or an ad blocker. The site works the same without it. If you have questions, or want to use your rights under UK data protection law, contact me at daniel@limeblast.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

Other services

The site is hosted by GitHub Pages, so GitHub processes your IP address to deliver pages and keep its service secure, as described in the GitHub General Privacy Statement. The fonts and scripts the site needs are served from maker.rip itself, not from Google or other third parties.

Videos and 3D models are shown as a picture with a play button. Nothing loads from YouTube or Tinkercad until you press play, at which point the player loads from that service (YouTube’s privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com, or Autodesk’s Tinkercad) and may set its own cookies.

Links to other sites, including Amazon, lead to services with their own privacy policies.

Stored on your device

The site sets no cookies. Your browser may keep a copy of pages so the site loads faster and works offline, and remembers whether you chose light or dark mode. Both stay on your device and are never sent to me.
